happy mothers day card

Hi there -

Spring is here…. May flowers are blooming and Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend.  If you’re thinking beyond chocolates or flowers as a gift for your Mom this year, pay careful attention to our tips about care labels below.

We wish you a nice weekend, and remind you that when you put your out-of-season clothing or households away for the summer, be sure to clean or launder EVERYTHING!  And then take care to store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, dark place!  Never an attic or basement that isn’t air conditioned. And of course, if you have any questions – just give us a call.

Take care.

Always Take a Moment to Check the Care Label

By Federal law, virutally every clothing purchase (with very few exceptions) you make is supposed to have a care label permanently attached. The label provides instructions for consumers and professional cleaners explaining how to handle the garment safely.

Some garment manufacturers have absolutely no respect for care labels, and we urge you to avoid these manufacturers and their cavalier labels at all costs.

Below is a care label (yes, it is for real) that a smart aleck manufacturer affixed to a garment.  Take a quick peak and you’ll see what we mean, when we say some garment makers treat the law  (and the buying public) with disdain!  And these guys are not alone!

And don’t forget – take the moment to check the label and make sure the manufacturer has taken their responsibility to you seriously.

Hi there!

Spring is here… well, almost.

That means it is time to think about switching out our closets, retiring our warm, winter clothes for the lighter garments of spring and summer.

We have a few words of advice as you begin this process:

-  Use this time to get rid of the things you don’t wear.

-  NEVER store anything until you either launder or dry clean it.  Even those things that look clean, harbor the remnants of perspiration, dead skin cells and other ‘stuff’ that can attract moths, silverfish and other pests that will feed on and damage your clothes.

-  Don’t store your out of season clothes in attics or basements, unless they are continuously air conditioned.  Dampness can create mold and mildew and temperature fluctuations are not good for stored items.

-  Consider using old (clean) suitcases to store out of season wear.  Don’t smother them in air tight plastic containers; your clothes need air circulation.

As always, if you have questions, feel free to ask us.

Happy Spring!

See you soon and take care,

closet care II

Organizing Your Closets for Spring & Summer

Sublimation of dyes.

I know it has a vaguely ominous sound to it, and when it comes to protecting your clothes for the long haul, it is a very ominous phenomena!

The sublimation of dyes is a curious occurrence that happens in closets (among other places) when the stagnant nitrogen gas in the air causes dark dyes to vaporize from fabrics and redeposit on nearby light garments, creating discoloration or outright staining.

To avoid it, consider color coding and ventilating your closets.

Sure, your friends may tease you about color coding your closets and dresser drawers, but the favorite garment you save with this practice, could be yours.

It’s also a good practice to leave closet doors open when you’re away for a weekend or longer!  That will allow air to circulate around the garments and built up indoor air pollutants to disperse.

guacamole football fieldIt’s Party Time!

If you’re planning a Superbowl party, we thought you might have some fun with a guacamole football field that comes in at just 25 calories per tablespoon (so it won’t be responsible for your guests having to visit our tailor to let out a seam or two!)

If you’re wondering why I suggest a pre-made dip over fresh avocadoes – here’s the back story:

Last year, I attended a friend’s Superbowl party and was tasked with cutting up the avocadoes for the guacamole dip.  Unfortunately, my friend was new to the world of guacamole (he’s actually from back east), and the avocadoes he bought were hard as a rock and impossible to cut, dice, blend or puree. Believe me, the bruises on my palms from trying to cut them stayed with me forever!  In the end, it was the WORST guacamole dip in the annals of Superbowl parties; hence my high regard for Wholly Guacamole – a pre-made dip!

Wholly Guacamole Gridiron Game Time Dip
Prep: 30 minutes

Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp butter
- ½ cup red bell pepper
- ½ cup onion, chopped
- 2, 15 oz cans black beans, rinsed / drained
- 2 tsp fresh chopped jalapeno peppers
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- 1 cup salsa
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
- 14 oz Wholly Guacamole
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 bag tortilla chips

Instructions:
1. Melt butter in skillet; add peppers and onion. Cook over medium heat until onion is softened.
(4 minutes). Stir in beans, jalapenos and cumin. Cook until heated.

2. Transfer 1 cup of bean mixture to a food processor, process until smooth. Return blended mixture to remaining mixture and stir to combine. Spread onto an 11×8 baking dish. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

3. Just before serving, layer over the bean mixture: salsa, cheese and top with Wholly Guacamole.

4. Spoon sour cream into resealable plastic bag. Snip off small corner and pipe sour cream lines over the guacamole to resemble yard markers on a football field.

Hi Kim -

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, and that the coming holiday season is filled with fun and good times spent with friends and family.

There’s no doubt that you’ll be spending some time in stores in the days to come, and that you’ll probably be buying a garment for either yourself or as a gift.  While we don’t want to ruin your joy, we wanted to remind you that you want that item to have a long and useful life.  That means you want to take a moment, check the care label and think twice about any garment that reads:  SPOT CLEAN ONLY or DRY CLEAN EXCLUSIVE OF ORNAMENTATION.   These items are inherently unable to withstand standard professional or at home care.  Unless it’s true love, avoid them at all costs.

Take care.  See you soon.
Happy Holiday,

Dressing Up for the Holidays –
An Important Tip

It’s that time of year when parties abound and the opportunities to ‘dress up’  are more than at any other time of year.

When you’re deciding what to wear, keep in mind that the silks, satins and loosely woven fabrics you’re donning are very fragile and extemely susceptible to snags and abrasion.

Be especially careful with crystal and other encrusted accessories and jewelry (prongs, charms, etc).  The simple act of placing your evening bag on your lap could result in a slight, but unsightly and irreversible abrasion that could ruin the look of your outfit.

Bridal/Wedding Gown Cleaning & Preservation

Your “once in a lifetime gown” should last a lifetime.  We put as much care into cleaning and preserving your gown, as you did in selecting it.

We offer two tiers of service for wedding gowns.  The first is to clean and press the dress.  It is then placed on a hanger in a long poly bag.  We recommend this service for pre-wedding cleaning.

The second tier is gown preservation.  Your gown is inspected, repairs made, professionally cleaned by hand and pressed.  It is then carefully sealed in an acid-free protective box that controls humidity.  All oxygen is removed from the box and pure nitrogen is pumped in to keep the dress fresh and free from yellowing.  The sealed package allows you to view your gown at any time while preventing mold, mildew and oxidation.  For extra protection the inner box is then placed in a durable long-term storage box for additional safety.

Leather cleaning

Our green cleaning process is particularly good for your leather and suede garments.  It is non-toxic, and gentler as it removes stains, dirt, leaving your leather rejuvenated, looking brighter as if new!

  • Leather and suede jackets, coats
  • Motorcycle wear
  • Sports letter jackets

Tablecloths, napkins, fine linens

Whether it’s for a formal dinner party or a family dinner, your table will look inviting and at its best professionally cleaned and pressed.  Our expert staff will spot clean, treat stains with care, and make sure your linens are in perfect condition, ready to use at your next dinner celebration.
