Happy Labor Day… our holiday schedule is…

shaffer dry cleaning 2014

Labor Day, the holiday that pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers, is also our emotional last hurrah of summer.

If you plan on using the upcoming three day weekend to do a bit of house cleaning and wardrobe care, scroll down for a few tips you might find helpful.  If you plan on taking advantage of the profusion of Labor Day retail sales, be sure to avoid buying clothes that bear a SPOT CLEAN ONLY label.

We hope everything is well with you and that we see you soon.

Take care,

Getting Your Home Ready For Autumn

According to Martha Stewart, Real Simple and other DIY pundits, now is a good time to banish summer dust buildup. Below are a few tips for you to use if cleaning and organizing is on your Labor Day weekend list of things to do.

1. Use your vacuum’s long brush attachment on ceilings, walls, baseboards, and woodwork.

2. Removing dust from furniture will keep it looking its best. Use an upholstery attachment. Protect delicate upholstery by vacuuming through a screen to prevent the fabric from being sucked into the nozzle.

3. Switching summer’s lightweight curtains for heavier drapes keeps out drafts and sets an elegant tone more appropriate for fall.

4. Launder or dry clean all
bedding: mattress pads, pillows, duvets, blankets, comforters, especially those
you plan on putting away until next summer.
5. Plan to remove winter clothes from storage. Begin packing up summer clothes and linens, checking first for items in need of repair, and replace them with cool-season items.  Never store anything unless you have first dry cleaned or laundered it.
6. Arrange to have your carpets professionally cleaned, and in the case of area rugs, post cleaning is a good time to rotate them to even out wear.
7. Test batteries in smoke detectors twice per year; Labor Day weekend is an excellent reminder to do this task.
